About the L-Acoustics SB118

The SB118 is a touring subwoofer, not a portable one. A single 18 inch driver in a dual bass-reflex cabinet, 135 dB on tap, and a low frequency limit of 32 Hz. The transducer was designed specifically for this box, and the thing it is designed to do is hold its composure: very low thermal compression and reduced distortion at the levels where lesser subs start to smear.

Coupled, flown or cardioid

Compact size and a tuning ratio chosen for coupling make the SB118 well behaved in multiples, which is the whole point of a sub in a real system. Integrated rails let it fly, stacking runners let it ground-stack square, and the LA4 or LA8 amplified controller carries cardioid presets: point the energy at the audience and take it off the stage, the backline and the residents behind the site.

Controlled by the amplifier, protected by it too

Drive and protection both live in the LA4 or LA8. The onboard DSP handles crossover, system EQ and dual thermal and over-excursion protection of the transducer. Standard presets low-pass at 60 Hz to sit under a main system, or at 100 Hz when it is carrying more of the range.
